2018년 11월 11일, 베테랑스 데이(재향 군인의 날)을 맞이하여 청소년 리더쉽 프로그램(KAYLP, 총괄 디렉터 조진숙)의 학생회원과 학부모들은 6.25 참전 유공자회 북가주지회의 초대로 매년 열리는 산호세 퍼레이드 행사에 참가했다.

어느새 100주년을 맞이한 베테랑스 데이를 기념하는 이 행사는 북부 캘리포니아의 가장 큰 행사 중 하나로 제2차 세계대전과 한국전쟁, 월남전, 이라크 전쟁에서 돌아온 재향군인 단체와 현역군인, 학교 밴드 등 100여 개의 단체가 매년 참가한다.

산호세 아레나에서 시작해 산타클라라 스트릿-마켓 스트릿으로 이어진 이 행사는 오후 12시에 시작하여 약 2시간이상 진행되었다 . 퍼레이드 양 옆에서는 다양한 국가의 참전 용사들을 환영하는 시민들로 북적였다.

KAYLP 회원들은 6.25 참전용사들과 함께 행진하며 시민들의 응원과 박수 속에 성공리에 퍼레이드를 마쳤다. 시민들이 수많은 전쟁에서 죽은 군인을 추모하고 살아 있는 고령의 전쟁 영웅인 제대 군인들에게 무한한 경의와 찬사를 보내는 장면은 참여한 청소년들에게 한 편의 살아 있는 역사 교육이었고, 애국심을 고취 시키는 시간이기도 하였다.

2014년부터 5년째 베테랑스 데이 퍼레이드에 참여하고 있는 KAYLP 청소년 회원들과 학부모들은 6.25 전쟁의 참전 용사들을 만나서 대화도 나누며 전쟁의 고통을 이해하는 뜻깊은 시간을 가졌다. 이를 통해 대한민국의 평화와 안전을 위해 기여한 분들에게 깊은 감사와 존경의 마음을 전하고 그 분들의 노고에 대해 다시 한번 생각하게 되는 값진 경험이었다고 전했다.

이번 행사에 참여한 KAYLP 학생들로는 최 션(쿠퍼티노 고등학교 10학년), 최 대니엘(하이드 중학교 8학년), 정민지(린브룩 고등학교11학년), 홍수민(린브룩 고등학교 11학년), 박성진(미션 산호세 고등학교 10학년), 정재윤(쿠퍼티노 고등학교 10학년),홍석민(린브룩 고등학교 10학년),권 브랜든(리랜드 고등학교 9학년), 정준호(린브룩 고등학교 9학년), 정준형(린브룩 고등학교 9학년), 심세화(세인트 로렌스 중학교 7학년)이다.

KAYLP Volunteers at 100 th Veterans Day Parade in Downtown San Jose.

Today marked the 100 th anniversary of the Veterans Day Parade which celebrates the armistice that ended World War I. This year’s honorary grand marshal was Maj. General Garrett Yee who served multiple tours of duty in the Middle East.

The parade started around noon today originating from Highway 87 and West Santa Clara Street and ending at the San Jose Tech Museum. Hundreds of people attended the parade this year. Veterans in uniform marched down the streets of Downtown San Jose with the crowds waving American Flags, as well as the flags of the countries where these veterans fought and were allies, including the flag of the Republic of South Korea.

In addition, to US veterans, Korean veterans, who fought alongside the US in the Korean War, were also present. The Korean American Youth Leadership Program (“KAYLP”), which organizes volunteer activities all over the Bay Area, was also there to march with these distinguished veterans.

KAYLP was started by Eunice Lee and has been tirelessly helping the community for 8 years. KAYLP has volunteered at the Veterans Day Parade for the past 5 years, sending motivated young students and their parents to this event. The volunteers marched with the Korean veterans, holding the US and South Korean flags, as well as the flag of the Korean War Veterans Association of Northern California. The Korean War Veterans Association of Northern California’s president, Mr. Paul Jaejeong Yoo, invited KAYLP volunteers to this year’s event.

KAYLP’s current director is Mrs. Jin Sook Cho who helped organize and lead this year’s volunteer efforts.
30 volunteers attended the parade including 11 student volunteers and 19 parent volunteers. The student volunteers were:
