i recommend dell for students or home use.  go to www.techbargains.com and get dell laptop e-coupons on dell website.  You can get good savings.
ibm laptops would be the best if you have extra bucks for their reliability.  reliability and customer support are the reasons why huge corporations go for ibm. 

also get 3 yr warranty for any laptops you buy.  laptops tend to break after a couple of years since you carry them everywhere and they get banged around.
